The Nebraska Writers Collective and All Writers Reserved contests will accept poems and visual arts on a rotating schedule. Please follow us for additional information on when contests open.

Eligibility:

All participating students must be attending a Nebraska or Pottawattamie County, Iowa middle school, high school, homeschool or GED program, or must have completed schooling in the 2024 school year. All participants must be 13 through 19 years old as of March 25, 2024.

Dates:

  • We will accept poetry and artwork submissions from March 25, 2024 through May 10, 2024.

Entry Format:

  • Poetry:  One poem per student may be entered. The poem can be a .doc, .docx, .txt, or .pdf file.
  • Artwork: One digital file of artwork may be submitted per student. The file can be a .png or .jpeg file.

Prize:

  • Those with an accepted submission will receive a $25 VISA gift card and a copy of the anthology. If we accept both poetry and art from you, you will still receive a maximum of one $25 gift card and one copy of the anthology.
  • If you would like additional copies of the anthology, they will be available to you for $5 each (half of the standard price.)

Additional Information:

  • All submissions must be the original work of the artist submitting them. Plagiarized poems, poems which directly pull from the work of others without doing substantial creative work, or poems that use original work pulled from other sources without citation will be disqualified. Note: direct quotations with attribution/citation, allusions, or inspiration typically do not count as plagiarism, though any language directly pulled from another source should be cited. When in doubt, check with the Anthology Committee. At least 85% of the poem must contain original work. The poem may then include quoted work like quotations or song lyrics in up to 15% of the poem. All quoted material should be attributed with a citation in the document as the poet feels appropriate. The citation could come as part of the poem, as an epigraph to start the poem, or as a footnote.
  • You are welcome to send us a poem that you have sent to other publications, however, we ask for a courtesy email letting us know if it is accepted by another publication and whether you want to withdraw it.
  • Poems should not encourage violence or apply racial, ethnic, gender biased, homophobic, religious, ableist, or otherwise discriminatory slurs, speech, or language to anyone. Additionally, poems should not contain profanity. Finally, poems should not contain sexually explicit or pornographic language.

Other Details: All artists with a poem and/or artwork selected for the anthology will need to sign a release, allowing the NWC to publish their work in this anthology and possibly use their work in our social media to promote the anthology and All Writes Reserved. The release also states that the work and its copyright remains with the artist.

Published Work Announcement: All submissions will be responded to no later than June 10, 2024.
